It’s like a permanent honeymoon. Hours merge into days into weeks into months … who really knows when ‘it’ really all started?
\n
I can tell you that I first got ‘involved’ with the internet in 1985. I mean it wasn’t what we know today. My own internet experience in those days was email around our international offices .. but it was the internet (ok, ok - intranet - there’s a word you don’t hear much these days.)
\n
Although Google Trends suggests I am wrong …
\n

\n
.. again!
\n
Anyway, I do remember being annoyed that my messages wouldn’t go out to the people I wanted to talk to - you know customers, partners, vendors - all the people a business should be talking to. .. we could only talk amongst ourselves. I mean the Cerne account team could connect to their customer .. why did I have to use Compusurf (sic)? … but that’s a different story.
\n
( .. and no I didn’t do AOL, Prodigy, Compuserve .. they were never for me - maybe even back then I had the innate desire to avoid being locked into a silo.)
\n
Anyway, that’s it … 25 Years with my 🔗 own domain ✅
\n
Onwards.
\n
How will I celebrate? Why - taking my towel down to the beach of course.
\n",

It wasn’t fully formed, but I had to start. And, as the posts started to happen over the next few days, there were different ideas and formats running around in my head and being tried out. With the layouts, every time I locked down on a new one - I went back to the older 366 posts and adjusted. (Not the post itself - the layout.) I have never been diagnosed with OCD, but I have my suspicions.
\n
It has now all settled down, a flow has been building, so much so that I have topics in my head that are maybe a week out.
\n
The trouble is that some of the topics are big, and I know I don’t have time on that day and some get really big so have to flag with 🚧 - my signal that I will be coming back.
\n
🖇️ Like this one for example, which I flagged with the emoji - but I know there is so much more to say that I even added words for more context.
\n
Let Me Explain
\n
I happen to share 366 posts into specific, yet different communities to solicit feedback. 🖇️ This one for example, has spawned comments applying the thinking to a game, which then moved on to applying that game to corporate workshops. Which is just brilliant really. No idea if any of that will take off - we will have to see .. I just like the idea that
\n
\n
a post on LinkedIN by someone I do not know resulted in
\n
a comment from someone I do know that caused me to
\n
write a post about how that triggered a connection to something that I bang on and on about which meant I had to
\n
find that original post so I could share that, so it made sense
\n
which then made the 2nd person in the chain seek to clarify the idea I was spouting
\n
which I confirmed that it was indeed
\n
so he then took that and suggested that a game could be developed around the process, to which I said
\n
or maybe turn it into a framework for Corporate Workshops and ….
\n
\n
… and that’s where we have got to so far. In amongst all of that I have some actions I need to do to close some loops - but it’s all because of the serendipity of the different people coming together in this chain of thinking. #Awesome
\n
But - and here’s the weird part … this wasn’t the serendipitous event that I was referencing when I first ideated the theme of this post. Not at all.
\n
The thread started as a simple idea that as I came up with this project - so too did Om, who I follow and read anyway - but within his ‘river’, he has a sub-theme called 🔗 Project 36
\n
I don’t really follow his photos (though they are really rather good), and I became aware of it because of 🔗this post on his blog, which ends with these words …
\n

\n
They really resonated with me. ()Om often does) and on the 3rd🖇️ January I linked to his New Years message because those words there in my mind right at that point because just three days in I was already feeling the enormity of what I had challenged myself to deliver, daily.
\n
I also have a couple of posts in the 366 series that are very short - to maintain the flow - but they don’t take much time. Like🖇️ this one from the 28th January - it’s a quick photo!
\n
But there’s more. fellow MicroBlogger 🔗 TeeJay seems to have also latched on to the one a day post. In his case - every single day he is putting a lovely image that he takes on that day.
\n
Turns out - for him it is not a new idea. 🔗As his new year post points out. and now his daily photo comes into my RSS feed each and every day - reminding me to stay the course.
\n
And to tie it all back. This whole post was one of those quick throwaways. I had the idea for a ‘serendipity’ post when I had seen Om and Teejay - it was up my sleeve to write it when I was short of time. Like today.
\n
Short of time? What the hell happened?
\n
The observant amongst you will have spotted that an ’eye candy’ image accompanies every post. In this case, I wrote my two lines and hopped over to Leonardo to generate my image.
\n
This was the first image to come out …
\n

\n
Seriously? Cubes? After just writing a a long post that featured a cube. Is Leonardo watching me? Of course I had to connect those dots and unpack that serendipity.
\n
And with that … done. Time to post. A quick check reveals the word count to be roughly 100 times my original target. I know I am hitting the send button with the post not fully proofed, which is why 🚧 is at the top.
\n
I will come back later to make whatever inevitable fixes I will need to do. For now though … I feel I have rambled to the end of this garden path and I can sense it has come around full circle back to where it all started.
\n
If you are still with me. Thankyou for seeing it through.
\n

\n\n\n\n\nAt the beginning of the year I had grand plans for this series. A daily long-form post about something that was rattling my brain that day. And then life. For a while, I was even just dropping markers - to revisit. I came to realise that part of the problem was the complexity of the structure for each post - so that went away. Simplicity really is rather nice. As I write on 240413, I am now going back and filling in the gaps. It was touching on a pet peeve of mine, despite TL;DR being a technique I use from time to time.
\n
This was the essence;
\n
\n
Sometimes it just can’t be any shorter and still be useful. Some lynchpin bit of data or context would have to be sacrificed, a risk go unnamed, a requirement remain unidentified.
\nSometimes information exchange has to include all the information AND the meta data it needs to build a bridge from you to me.
\nSometimes “Too Long; Didn’t Read” is a terrible risk/reward proposition, and you have to go all the way to “Very Long; Must Read.”
\nWhen everything extra has been distilled out, but there’s still a lot there, that’s a sign of something complex enough to be fascinating, or at least full of critical, decision-influencing intel.
\n
\n
He ended his post with a reference back to the source.
\n
\n
I remember 🔗 Marjorie Anderson activating that thought in my head weeks ago, and now it won’t leave.
\n
\n
This resonated ….
\n
\n
Sometimes TL;DR simply must yield to VL;MR
\n
\n
Which got me to thinking.
\n
You know how I am with that word … ‘content’.
\n
To remind from one of many posts on the topic - just on this blog ….
\n
\n
As long as ‘we the creators’ keep using low cost, homogenous, non-descript words like ‘content’ to describe our work, our soul, our passion, our beliefs then our work will continue to be viewed as ‘free - to - cheap - to - low - cost’, ‘homogenized, non differentiated, interchangeable fodder’ (which coincidentally is what silos have always been used for), then, we only have ourselves to blame as the resultant payment for our art, our thinking and our ideas, will continue to race to the bottom.
\n
\n
And whilst on the topic of silos ….
\n
\n
You should never … ever … trust a Silo. It’s theirs. The stuff you put there is theirs. Even our’ handle is actually ‘theirs’.
\n
\n
All this and more can be found in an earlier post here : 🖇️ Friends Don’t Let Friends Write Content
\n
And it is not just me …
\n
Just today
\n

\n
and last year .. Dana Carvey and Will Arnett brought it up (listen it’s a one minute snipped) on the Smartless podcast.
\n
Anyway, with that all said … ‘set up’ done … ✅
\n
So What?
\n
It struck me that ‘TL;DR | VL;MR’ is the second axis I have been looking for in my one man war on ‘content’. So I drew the picture.
\n
‘content | material ’ on the x axis and ‘TL;DR | VL;MR’ on the y axis - and I was left with ‘Yeah .. so what?
\n
The ‘so what’ was because I realized that it was missing the third axis …‘Entertainment | Understanding’
\n
The fact is that so much that is running around the ‘interwebs’ is ‘Entertainment’. Nothing wrong with that, but VL;MR is really about Understanding.
\n
Moreover, the front facing 4 quadrants are all about ‘Entertainment | Understanding’ and TL;DR | VL;MR - not ‘Content | Material’
\n
So I drew it again.
\n
\n

\n
\n
The coloration isn’t quite right for all occasions, but in this particular context
\n
\n
on the entertainment side - it doesn’t really matter which end of the TL;DR | VL;MR spectrum you are - a 240 character tweet can be as entertaining as a 3 hour movie or a 1,000 page book, BUT on the understanding side .. sure sometimes a pithy one liner can shed light on an issue that a three volume encyclopedia will never do. It’s also true that a very short mathematical equation is very powerful when it comes to ’explaining’ - IF you understand the language of math(s) (I like to accommodate both sides of the Atlantic if I can), which most people do not.
\n
\n
But generally that is not the case, because what triggered me is that context and history and space and time and .. is needed to really bottom out ‘Understanding’
\n
So far so good?
\n
I added the third dimension.
\n
\n

\n
\n
And we are there … nearly.
\n
The dimensions are right - but the colors remain at odds with my thinking. I have the image in my head plus the colors need to be fading from one color to the next - depending on the context. I am not a graphic artist … and I could draw what I am thinking … eventually … and maybe I will return to complete / correct this.
\n
But before I do that. Make sense? See where I am coming from?
\n

\n\n\n\n\nAt the beginning of the year I had grand plans for this series. They have always been there - and though not necessarily recognised or even understood - I bet if you find successful people in that 'old' economy - they would demonstrate a lot of these traits.
\n
2) Josh is not alone in highlighting these skills and their importance. What nobody is doing is organizing these skills into a taxonomy - much less an ontology.\n(What's the difference you may ask) Stan Garfield has a very simple explanation)
\n
Taxonomy
\n

\n
Ontology
\n

\n
... except now there is.
\n
More of this to come, but have to say, very excited by a company I have been talking to that has not only done a lot of research into these skills, but also which skills are most important - and why, depending on what you are trying to do.
\n
Not only that, but they are releasing an app that will allow anybody to
\n
\n
assess their personal strengths and weaknesses across all skills
\n
define which of those skills they should focus on to maximise their ability to be most succesful at what they are trying to do
\n
all through a self paced, self directed, learning program.
\n
\n
As I said - more to come. Just to say - the cavalry is on its way.
\n
\n
Featured Image by Tim Mossholder on Unsplash
\n",

Since publishing the three words in my annual new year newsletter, a number of people have asked questions;
\n\n\n
\n
where did the idea come from?
\n
what are the rules?
\n
can you tell me more about the process?
\n
is it ok to have four words?
\n
\n\n\n
etc etc
\n\n\n
So first - not my idea. I got it from Chris Brogan - but I don’t think he started it. To fill in some gaps - this is what Chris has to say.
\n\n\n\n\n
What is My 3 Words About?
\n\n\n
The My Three Words idea is simple. Choose 3 words (not 1, not 4) that will help guide your choices and actions day-to-day. Think of them as lighthouses. “Should I say yes to this project?” “Well, does this align with my three words?”
\n\n\n
My take : Rules are made to be broken. I get why three is better than one ... for me - but whatever works for you. This is an exercise to help you shape your thinking and actions in a consistent way throughout a year.
\n\n\n
How to Choose Three Words
\n\n\n
I started this process back in 2006. Back then, my 3 words were “Ask. Do. Share.” I picked these very simple words and they served me very well. One of my best years ever. When I asked questions, I learned. When I took action based on what I learned from asking, I made more ground and took over more of the universe. When I shared what I learned with everyone, I made connections and some friends.
\n\n\n
Choose any three words you feel will guide you forward. I can tell you a few things about this:
\n\n\n
\n
Don’t make it a phrase. “Publish the book” is a terrible choice. “The” is wasted.
\n
Try to make the words actionable. “Expand” is better than “bigger.”
\n
The more utilitarian the word can be, the better. These words have to be your compass.
\n
Stick with the 3 words all year. Every time I’ve changed one a month or two later, the year mucks up. I can’t explain it. But I can report it.
\n
Years where I’ve tried “fancy” words with layers of meaning, I lost the thread. Use plain words, maybe.
\n
BUT the words don’t have to mean anything to anyone but you. Don’t worry about explaining them.
\n
\n\n\n
My take: Can't argue with anything here. That last one is probably the most important. The three words are not for you to explain to others. They are your words, for you.
\n\n\n
Review Them Daily
\n\n\n
The more you review your 3 words, the better. I have mine built into my daily planning guides and action stacks. I try using them for a mantra when I can. Sometimes on walks, I just repeat them over and over. I like to reflect on them and meditate a little with those words in mind.
\n\n\n
My take: I didn’t do this last year. I am going to try this year, particularly since this year's words have a very specific direction in mind, whereas last years was more of a broader 'raise the boat' theme.
\n\n\n
My Three Words
\n\n\n
I have decided to follow Chris' example and publish my words in a single place and so annually, will revisit this post and update.
\n\n\n
2019 - Uncertain - Less - Different [published here]
\n\n\n
2020 - Believe - Move - Ascend [published here]
\n\n\n

\n",

Five of the six most valuable firms in the world are built around these types of platforms. However, a study of 252 platform companies showed that 209 of them failed. The most common mistakes into four categories:

(1) mispricing on one side of the market,

(2) failure to develop trust with users and partners,

(3) prematurely dismissing the competition, and

(4) entering too late.

Researchers have extensively studied pricing decisions, yet managers still get them wrong. The graphic below is old, but I haven't been able to find a more recent one. Like all good 2*2 quadrants, top right is best, bottom left is worst and the other two quadrants have their challenges [efn_note]To be fair JH would disagree with my assessment - he argues that no quadrant is wrong - so long as you understand which quadrant you are in and work accordingly. And yes of course. But I am not in any of those quadrants. I am arguing for how people can operate in a 'Corporate First' society - and to me - the best chance they stand is in the top right quadrant.[/efn_note].
\n\n\n

\n\n\n
Platforms are indeed lubricators of <g class=\"gr_ gr_6 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"6\" data-gr-id=\"6\">a a market</g> place, but they are also a series of silos. You clock up 10,000 rides. You have a five-star rating and then you decide that you want to move to Lyft. (The same argument applies the other way round). You now have 0 rides to your name, there is no star count, your reputation is effectively locked up in Uber. You have to start again.
\n\n\n
How hard would it be to have a universal reputation that travels with you.
