It’s 18 months old - but 🔗 this post from TimUrban resurfaced this morning, where he talks about how long it took to write his book, reminding me of a post I have had parked for a while now. Time to unleash it.

The title of this post was originally ‘Are We Being Forced To Conform?’ I changed it because as I read it before publishing, I think I answered my own question. We are.

It all started as I was 🖇️ building on this post which was about flavor (🔗the original Substack and how it reminded me of Rick Beato’s piece on people not understanding something being ‘📼 🔗 out of tune’). Small potatoes really - a little bit o' fun.

At the time - over on Substack I commented on the flavor post

I couldn’t work out which bit to highlight so read the whole thing it’s the food version of Rick Beato talking about people not understanding what ‘out of tune’ means … and we wonder why the world is being turned upside down?

Then I started thinking more about a thread that emerged over on Micro.Blog, where @manton commented that he had started and been noodling a post for months before scrapping it and starting again before he published a post he had been noodling on Gaza.

I think 🔗 this is the post that Manton finally settled on., which on the whole assumes a reasonably fair and neutral position that everyone applauded .. and what is really not to love? (A lot IMHO - but that is for another post.)

What follows is the nub of my worry …

The French have (had?) an expression

vive la différence

.. that in my life I have used a lot, despite the fact that according to the OED, there are around 0.3 occurrences per million words in modern written English of the word ‘vive’ - let alone ‘vive la différence’. But heh - vive la différence 😂

The phrase is used to express appreciation of diversity. Maybe that is why it has fallen out of use? Should I stop using it too?

When I was a lad I learned about standard deviation and how oft times populations fell into some kind of ‘normal distribution’ with the vast majority sitting within ‘±3𝜎’.

It seems to this bear that no matter what our private beliefs and personas might be - the crowd is forcing us into only sharing the parts of our personas that fit the vanilla of modern life, with the result that on the face of it, society is forcing conversation in ‘the town square’ to something more like ±𝜎 - and you keep anything outside of that to yourself - for fear of retaliation.

Consider 🔗 this post from @pratik for example.

Sadly the Internet has been weaponized and far from creating a place to be educated about the differences of people and countries and life - we are being forced into submission. It’s a place where ignorance is not so much celebrated as ignored - and ignored because on the whole it isn’t recognized, and if you do anything counter to the noise - expect to be piled on because 🔗 you are either with us, or against us.

At the beginning of the year I had grand plans for this series. A daily long-form post about something that was rattling my brain that day. And then life. For a while, I was even just dropping markers - to revisit. I came to realise that part of the problem was the complexity of the structure for each post - so that went away. Simplicity really is rather nice. As I write on 240413, I am now going back and filling in the gaps. PLUS - unless something strikes me immediately, I will not classify until the end of the day and go back to move one of the posts of the day into the 366. If you are paying attention .. thankyou. I knew somebody would be, it is clear you have a discerning taste and a very specific eye for detail 😂. You might also have been wondering whether or not I can keep up this rate of posting on this blog. Maybe. But I won’t be. By the weekend I will likely be back to a more gentle cadence.

A good few weeks saw a raft of work and changes to the blog to make it easier to navigate, find stuff and provide more structure to what is at this time of writing. (Even if it is only for me!)

Bottom line, I have been making sense of

24 pages and 54 categories, 7,798 posts and 12,010 replies … and counting.

Not to say that I have recognized that what I have here (other than that other archive) is actually ‘A Public Journal’.

Earlier this week a friend introduced me to Slavoj Žižek - and specifically, he referenced The Perverts Guide To Cinema. I started watching and suddenly realized that it was over 2 1/2 hours long. I saved to ‘watch later’! Seriously - watch the first 5 to 10 minutes - you can’t just stop and never return … BUT … life does have a limited duration!

I commented on this to my friend … he responded …

I had no idea it was that long! There is not enough alcohol in New Zealand to get you (let alone two of you) through 2.5 hours. This six-minute piece is more than enough to convey Zizek’s characteristic mannerisms (mental and physical). And he neatly endorses the critique of “the fetishism of action” by reversing Marx’s 11th thesis on Feuerbach: “In the 20th-century we tried to change the world too quickly, it’s time to go back to interpreting it.” Big Think

There are a group of companies springing up that are doing for the written word what Dall-E, MidJourney and Craiyon are doing for images, which is to say - enter some core text and let an AI generate the output.

My mind explodes when I see the 'image' results.

I think ‘meh’ - so far - when I see the 'written' results.

I am pretty sure that the engines are as sophisticated as each other, so I wonder if my reaction is more to do with my own abilities - as in I have NO artistic ability when it come to creating images, but I can - and do write - so my bar is higher?

As I was publishing this post from John Maloney, I thought I would look up the word gig ... it makes for an interesting read.

A child's pacifier or any object, as a cloth square, spoon, or the like, used as a toy; any object to which a small child is attached and with which he likes to play; any object treated by a child as a fetish; a gigi or ju-ju. The 'gig economy' is dopey. Always had a problem w/the term.

For me, a gig is a trident tip spear used for gigging. Period.

Growing up in rural and coastal Connecticut, from April to November, gigging was a principal pastime. We'd go after anything gigable, but mostly bullfrogs and flounder. It was very effective.

Imagine it was quite unpleasant for the gigged fauna. (Not unlike the 'gig economy.') Most of the catch made it to the table. We could gig in the Winter, by simply cutting a hole in the ice, chumming and waiting. It was cold and not as fun.

Once moving to California, the prospect of gigging New England Style was not really available. However, gigging with a modest technological change, was even better than gigging in ponds and estuaries on the East Coast.

Supposedly the Hawaiians invented the 'Hawaiian Sling'. It’s a gig with a piece of surgical tube attached. It is wicked effective.

From Santa Barbara to Mendocino got to gig/sling a lot. The best was the halibut at the beach at the entrance to Diablo Canyon in SLO at night. Wow. Could fill my freezer with one clean shot. (Later learned it was a key halibut spawning area, thus frowned upon.) It was fun and delicious while it lasted.

Gigging is a good metaphor for the gig economy. Just make sure you are on the right end of the gig. Avoid the King Neptune of Gigging, Dara Khosrowshahi.

Have to say ... of gigging as described by John I know nought, but totally with him on the Dara reference and that is another story about why a gig is no solution.

Husband Store

A store that sells new husbands has opened in New York City , where a woman may go to choose a husband. Among the instructions at the entrance is a description of how the store operates:

You may visit this store ONLY ONCE! There are six floors and the value of the products increase as the shopper ascends the flights. The shopper may choose any item from a particular floor, or may choose to go up to the next floor, but you cannot go back down except to exit the building!

So, a woman goes to the Husband Store to find a husband. On the first floor the sign on the door reads:

Floor 1 - These men Have Jobs

She is intrigued, but continues to the second floor, where the sign reads:

Floor 2 - These men Have Jobs and Love Kids.

‘That’s nice,’ she thinks, ‘but I want more.’

So she continues upward. The third floor sign reads:

Floor 3 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, and are Extremely Good Looking.
