Nope. Not there. I searched the whole room. Nothing. Nada. Null.</p>\n<p>Back downstairs I came.</p>\n<p>“Still not there,” I reported.</p>\n<p>“Good grief, do I need to go?”</p>\n<p>“Yes,” I said. “Clearly I am incapable.”</p>\n<p>She downed tools, walked two steps, and announced: “They’re in my pocket.”</p>\n<p>Of course to Jax it was hilarious.         "content_html": "<p>It’s 18 months old - but <a href=\"https://waitbutwhy.com/2023/02/last-six-years.html\">🔗 this post from TimUrban</a> resurfaced this morning, where he talks about how long it took to write his book, reminding me of a post I have had parked for a while now. <strong>Time to unleash it.</strong></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://cdn.uploads.micro.blog/2529/2024/6f1a21da70.jpg\" alt=\"\"></p>\n<p>The title of this post was originally &lsquo;<strong>Are We Being Forced To Conform?</strong>&rsquo; I changed it because as I read it before publishing, I think I answered my own question. <strong>We are.</strong></p>\n<p>It all started as I was <a href=\"https://john.philpin.com/2024/05/05/163910.html\">🖇️  building on this post</a> which was about flavor (<a href=\"https://substack.com/home/post/p-143687751\">🔗the original Substack</a> and how it reminded me of Rick Beato’s piece on people not understanding something being ‘<a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifJPjMlwB0s\">📼 🔗 out of tune</a>’). Small potatoes really - a little bit o' fun.</p>\n<p><strong>At the time - over on Substack I commented on the flavor post</strong></p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I couldn&rsquo;t work out which bit to highlight so read the whole thing it&rsquo;s the food version of Rick Beato talking about people not understanding what &lsquo;out of tune&rsquo; means … and we wonder why the world is being turned upside down?</p>\n</blockquote>\n<p>Then I started thinking more about a thread that emerged over on Micro.Blog, where <a href=\"https://micro.blog/manton\">@manton</a> commented that he had started and been noodling a post for months before scrapping it and starting again before he published a post he had been noodling on Gaza.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://www.manton.org/2024/05/02/been-working-on.html\">🔗 The comments on the original post are informative</a></p>\n<p>I think <a href=\"https://www.manton.org/2024/05/04/good-trouble.html\">🔗 this is the post that Manton finally settled on.</a>, which on the whole assumes a reasonably fair and neutral position that everyone applauded .. and what is really not to love? (A lot IMHO - but that is for another post.)</p>\n<h3 id=\"what-follows-is-the-nub-of-my-worry-\">What follows is the nub of my worry …</h3>\n<p>The French have (had?) an expression</p>\n<h4 id=\"vive-la-différence\">vive la différence</h4>\n<p>.. that in my life I have used a lot, despite the fact that according to the OED, there are around 0.3 occurrences per million words in modern written English of the word   ‘vive’  - let alone ‘vive la différence’. But heh - <strong>vive la différence</strong> 😂</p>\n<p>The phrase is used to express <strong>appreciation of diversity</strong>. Maybe that is why it has fallen out of use? Should I stop using it too?</p>\n<p>When I was a lad I learned about standard deviation and how oft times populations fell into some kind of ‘normal distribution’ with the vast majority sitting within ‘±3𝜎’.</p>\n<p>It seems to this bear that no matter what our private beliefs and personas might be - the crowd is forcing us into only sharing the parts of our personas that fit the vanilla of modern life, with the result that on the face of it, society is forcing conversation in ‘the town square’ to something more like ±𝜎 - and you keep anything outside of that to yourself - for fear of retaliation.</p>\n<p>Consider <a href=\"https://microblog.pratikmhatre.com/2024/05/05/the-evolution-of.html\">🔗 this post</a>  from <a href=\"https://micro.blog/pratik\">@pratik</a> for example.</p>\n<p>Sadly the Internet has been weaponized and far from creating a place to be educated about the differences of people and countries and life - we are being forced into submission. It&rsquo;s a place where ignorance is not so much celebrated as ignored - and ignored because on the whole it isn&rsquo;t recognized, and if you do anything counter to the noise - expect to be piled on because  <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You_are_either_with_us,_or_against_us\">🔗 you are either with us, or against us</a>.</p>\n<h3 id=\"our-way---or-the-highway\">Our Way - Or The Highway</h3>\n<p><a href=\"https://lefsetz.com/wordpress/2024/06/17/the-road-less-taken/\">The Road Less Taken</a> .. ‘Less’, by Bob, not to be confused with ‘Not’, by the other ‘Bob’.</p>\n<p>Bob L agrees.</p>\n<hr>\n<p>Rick&rsquo;s video is referenced in para' 4.</p>\n",

We'd go after anything gigable, but mostly bullfrogs and flounder. It was very effective.&nbsp;</p>\n<!-- /wp:paragraph -->\n<!-- wp:more -->\n<!-- /wp:more -->\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Imagine it was quite unpleasant for the gigged fauna. (Not unlike the 'gig&nbsp;economy.') Most of the catch made it to the table. We could&nbsp;gig&nbsp;in the Winter, by simply cutting a hole in the ice, chumming and waiting. It was cold and not as fun.</p>\n<!-- /wp:paragraph -->\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Once moving to California, the prospect of gigging New England Style was not really available. However, gigging with a modest technological change, was even better than gigging in ponds and estuaries on the East Coast.</p>\n<!-- /wp:paragraph -->\n<!-- wp:media-text {\"mediaId\":9748,\"mediaType\":\"image\",\"isStackedOnMobile\":false,\"className\":\"alignwide\"} -->\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img src=\"https://people-first.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/trident-trident-28-lionfish-spear-w-6-prong.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9748 size-full\"/></figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\"><!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Supposedly the Hawaiians invented the '<a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawaiian_sling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Hawaiian Sling (opens in a new tab)\">Hawaiian Sling</a>'. It’s a&nbsp;gig&nbsp;with a piece of surgical tube attached. It is wicked effective.&nbsp;</p>\n<!-- /wp:paragraph --></div></div>\n<!-- /wp:media-text -->\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>From Santa Barbara to Mendocino got to&nbsp;gig/sling a lot. The best was the halibut at the beach at the entrance to Diablo Canyon in SLO at night. Wow. Could fill my freezer with one clean shot. (Later learned it was a key halibut spawning area, thus frowned upon.) It was fun and delicious while it lasted.&nbsp;</p>\n<!-- /wp:paragraph -->\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Gigging is a good metaphor for the&nbsp;gig&nbsp;economy. Just make sure you are on the right end of the&nbsp;gig. There are six floors and the value of the products increase as the shopper ascends the flights. The shopper may choose any item from a particular floor, or may choose to go up to the next floor, but you cannot go back down except to exit the building!</p>\n<p>So, a woman goes to the Husband Store to find a husband. Among the instructions at the   entrance is a description of how the store operates:<p>You may visit this store ONLY ONCE! There are six floors and the   value of the products increase as the shopper ascends the flights. The shopper may choose any item from a particular floor, or may choose to go up to  the next floor, but you cannot go back down except to exit the building!</p><p>So, a woman goes to the Husband Store to find a husband. On the first   floor the sign on the door reads:</p><p>Floor 1 - These men Have Jobs.</p><p>She is intrigued, but continues to the second floor, where the sign  reads:</p><p>Floor 2 - These men Have Jobs and Love Kids.</p><p>&ldquo;That&rsquo;s nice&rdquo;, she thinks, &ldquo;but I want more.&quot;</p><p>So she continues upward. The third floor sign reads:</p><p>Floor 3 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, and are Extremely Good  Looking.</p><p>&ldquo;Wow,&rdquo; she thinks, but feels compelled to keep going.</p><p>She goes to the fourth floor and the sign reads:</p><p>Floor 4 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, are Drop-dead Good Looking and Help With Housework.</p><p>&ldquo;Oh, mercy me!&rdquo; she exclaims, &ldquo;I can hardly stand it!&quot;</p><p>Still, she goes to the fifth floor and the sign reads:</p><p>Floor 5 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, are Drop-dead Gorgeous,  Help with Housework, and Have a Strong Romantic Streak.</p><p>She is so tempted to stay, but she goes to the sixth floor, where the   sign reads:</p><p>Floor 6 - You are visitor 31,456,012 to this floor. There are no men  on this floor. This floor exists solely as proof that women are impossible to please.
