Of course it is. But the bigger question is what is your purpose?

Imagine my delight to stumble across this Ted Talk ... 'How to know your life's purpose in 5 minutes.' Finally!

Adam sets the scene pretty quickly. You just need to ask yourself 5 questions and 'Bob's your Uncle'.

5 Questions To Answer Your Purpose

who you were
what do you do
who do they do it for
what those people want or need
what they get out of it - how they changed as a result

Simple. Right?

It's so simple that he takes the entire audience on a journey of him asking - and them answering - those 5 questions, by shouting them out.

The answer to question 1 - after a little prompting - was loud.

Question 2, still pretty good.

After that it all falls apart. By the time you get to the answer to number 5, well it's not that you could hear a pin drop - but you kind of get the feeling that the audience is sorry for him.

Why?

I think it’s because the questions are easy. You've read them so many times before. The answers, not so much.

To be clear, the purpose of this article is not to state the 'bleeding obvious', but rather to highlight that if you are struggling with that definition. It's ok ...

As we move computing power to the edge, this talk resonates even more. Two - that's two conversations just yesterday that I had where we talked about bringing the power of computing to your pocket.

Think about it - we glibly talk about the 'supercomputer in our pocket' - and we use it to 'like' Facebook posts, send messages and whatever else it is you do - but hardly supercomputer activity.

Conversation two, I can't say too much about, suffice to say that the work being done is moving the power of a Cray (for those that don’t know - the Cray literally is a Supercomputer) into your house! Get your head around that for a minute.

He just about opens the talk with

I came to understand, that there's a set of core competencies every young person must be well on their way to mastery before he or she finished high school.
- critical thinking and problem solving
- collaboration across networks and leading by influence
- agility and adaptability
- initiative and entropenorialism
- effective oral and written communication
- accessing and analyzing information
- curiosity and imagination

i.e. if you have left school, sorry - we taught you all wrong as to how to succeed in the life in front of you.

What he should have said was

I came to understand, that there's a set of core competencies every person must master.

I know he doesn't mean it and I guess it is about education - but the implication is that you have left school then 'we taught you all wrong'.

Keeping that in mind ... well worth a watch.

My Thoughts

I sat down to watch this with great anticipation and was thoroughly disappointed. It’s not just that it wasn’t a good interview - it wasn’t - but the thinking espoused by Roy just didn’t resonate for me.

Yes he’d done research and talked to people - but that is at odds with what anyone can see if they open their eyes.

How he built Chobani is a fascinating story. And at one point I was very much reminded me of a couple of People First tenets.
