Is there planning in strategy?

In one of my work programmes there is an ongoing debate around planning and strategy .. one of the team going as far as to suggest that ‘strategic planning’ is an oxymoron (my words). This seems to nicely channel an aspect of that thinking.

This particular quote

If you are a board member, recognize (as above) that if you ask for strategy, you are likely to get planning. As a steward of the company, you need to raise your game and demand strategy.

is taken from 🔗 this article, which in turn arrived with me from discussions over at the UNdaunted. You’ll be hearing more about them over the next year.)

I think it also plays into the old adage (I paraphrase) ..

“All plans are a waste … but planning is essential.”

For me. I think there is truth in this line of thought.

What do you think?

At the beginning of the year I had grand plans for this series. A daily long-form post about something that was rattling my brain that day. And then life. For a while, I was even just dropping markers - to revisit. I came to realise that part of the problem was the complexity of the structure for each post - so that went away. Simplicity really is rather nice. As I write on 240413, I am now going back and filling in the gaps. PLUS - unless something strikes me immediately, I will not classify until the end of the day and go back to move one of the posts of the day into the 366. Also - if you are wondering how I have update the words at the bottom of over 100 posts at a stroke, well - THANK YOU Andy Sylvester and his Glossary plugin.

Dear Xfinity this happened over two months ago - and now you are telling us?

Xfinity Data Security Incident

Notice of Data Security Incident

We are notifying you of a recent data security incident involving your personal information. This notice explains the incident, steps Xfinity has taken to address it, and guidance on what you can do to protect your personal information.

What Happened? On October 10, 2023, one of Xfinity’s software providers, Citrix, announced a vulnerability in one of its products used by Xfinity and thousands of other companies worldwide. At the time Citrix made this announcement, it released a patch to fix the vulnerability. Citrix issued additional mitigation guidance on October 23, 2023. We promptly patched and mitigated our systems. However, we subsequently discovered that prior to mitigation, between October 16 and October 19, 2023, there was unauthorized access to some of our internal systems that we concluded was a result of this vulnerability. We notified federal law enforcement and conducted an investigation into the nature and scope of the incident. On November 16, 2023, it was determined that information was likely acquired.

What Information Was Involved? On December 6, 2023, we concluded that the information included usernames and hashed passwords; for some customers, other information was also included, such as names, contact information, last four digits of social security numbers, dates of birth and/or secret questions and answers. However, our data analysis is continuing, and we will provide additional notices as appropriate.

What We Are Doing. To protect your account, we have proactively asked you to reset your password. The next time you login to your Xfinity account, you will be prompted to change your password, if you haven’t been asked to do so already.

What You Can Do. We strongly encourage you to enroll in two-factor or multi-factor authentication. While we advise customers not to re-use passwords across multiple accounts, if you do use the same information elsewhere, we recommend that you change the information on those other accounts, as well. You can review the “Additional Information” section below for information on how you can further protect your personal information.

More Information. If you have additional questions, please contact IDX, Xfinity’s incident response provider managing customer notifications and call center support, at 888-799-2560 toll-free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. More information is available on the Xfinity website at www.xfinity.com/dataincident. We know that you trust Xfinity to protect your information, and we can’t emphasize enough how seriously we are taking this matter. We remain committed to continue investing in technology, protocols and experts dedicated to helping to protect your data and keeping you, our customer, safe.

Sincerely, Xfinity

About That Adobe - Figma Thing

Sorry - but this is going to be a ‘MicroBlog Storm’. Is that a thing I hear you ask? Why yes - yes it is. If IKEA can have 🖇️ ‘Vintage IKEA’ - then hell has clearly frozen over - and a ‘MicroBlog Storm’ is definitely a thing.

Careful What It Says In The Small Print

I was meant to be picking up a car from 🔗 Europcar this afternoon - for a one month reservation.

I just tried to change that reservation and pick it up early tomorrow.

Lady on the call center said no problem - and was about to hit the confirmation button … but as she was talking I hear that the new price was DOUBLE the old price.

DOUBLE!!!

When I booked car, the agent said that there would be no problem and no charge to change the booking if I need to.

I relayed this to this booking agent.

Absolutely she said, it would normally cost you 6 dollars to change the booking - and we are waiving that fee … but the contract also says that if the cost of the rental changes, we have to reflect that change in the new contract.

New job this afternoon … go down to Auckland Airport and pick up the car rental.

🎥 The Family Plan, 2023 - ★★★½

Generally like a nice Wahlberg movie .. no exception .. in fact one of his better ones. It’s a formula .. sure .. aren’t they all? But overall .. YES.

🎥 Heart of Stone, 2023 - ★★½

It was alright. I try out Gal Godot outings from me to time because I clearly am missing something. Whatever it is I continue to miss it!

🎥 The Peanut Butter Falcon, 2019 - ★★★★

Lovely. One for the ’keeper’ department.

🎥 The Killer, 2023 - ★★★★

Watched on Saturday December 9, 2023.

🎥 Wingwomen, 2023 - ★

No. Just no. I watched it all the way through .. Just for you. NO!

🎥 Asteroid City, 2023 - ★★★★

Yes it’s Wes Anderson, so you kinda know what you are going to get … except you don’t. To me seemed a lot more intricate than his precious outings.

🎥 Oppenheimer, 2023 - ★★★★½

Not sure I can add anything more to reviews than you already know, other than I didn’t see it in IMAX, I wish I had.

🎥 Living, 2022 - ★★★★

Lovely .. and one of those ‘little’ films … and Bill Nye … c’mon .. why are you still here?

🎥 BlackBerry, 2023 - ★★★½

I know most of the story, but like to cross check that knowledge with what the film delivers, new stuff, look into … blah blah blah ..ok I generally like these kinds of movies … royal epics aside .. it didn’t disappoint. It is what it is.

The Tetris story I knew a lot less about … enjoyed it more … because I didn’t know the story(?) or just a better story and movie(?) … I suspect the latter.

🎥 Space Oddity, 2022 - ★★½

Average … seen it before .. predictable

🎥 The Water Diviner, 2014 - ★★★

Another ‘little” movie .. and to prove I don’t automatically like them … this was alright, but .. yeah .. no. It was a while back when I watched it.

🎥 What a Life!, 2023 - ★★★★

… and I didn’t even hear the dialogue! Watched it on a plane, the audio system was so crapped out and dodgy … thankyou Quantas …  that I mainly watched stuff on the iPad. Accidentally discovered this scrolling through … subtitles .. so I just watched and read the subtitles. Glorious. Another one of those ‘little’ films. Need to find it again and listen this time.

🎥 The Killer, 2023 - ★★★★

He - ‘somebody’ loves The Smiths. I don’t … but it didn’t stop me enjoying the film, because Fassbender is that good.

🎥 The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, 2023 - ★★★★

Lovely. The story broke in a couple of places ... but I didn't care. Lovely. One of those ‘little movies’ that I LOVE.

Work Backwards

There’s an old joke about ‘Henry’ getting lost in the narrow lanes of Devon, England and needing to return to London. He spotted a farmer on the side of the road and pulled over, admitting to the farmer that he was lost and was looking for directions to get him back to London.

“London!” … replied the farmer … “… well if I was going to London … I wouldn’t be startin’ here.”

It’s an old one. It’s a funny one and like all good humor is rooted in truth.

I had a great call with Steve Cook of The UNdaunted the night before last and over the course of multiple hours we covered oh so much .. and will save those stories for another time.

Except this one.

Discussion included the old chestnuts; change, transition and transformation.

People who work in this world know the Current State / Future State model (or as we used to call it in Group Partners … Current Reality / Future Vision). Steve and I agreed that a big stumbling block is people starting at the current state - and wanting to know the steps to take to get to the future state, more often than not with an end result of ‘It’s too hard’. … ‘It doesn’t work’.

Result? They give up. Worse? It fails.

I would argue that ( and to paraphrase my friend John Caswell ), they are attempting to ‘solve the wrong problem really well’.

Moving from Current State to Future State is not easy if you are attempting to solve the problem with the same thinking that got you there. Instead imagine … visualize (Now you know why we say ‘future vision’) the best outcome and then engineer backwards. It’s not the same.

Back to our farmer.

Current Reality - Lost in Devon
Future Vision - Safe in London

All he was doing was highlighting the limitations of ‘linear thinking’, which in three steps might well have the driver lost again. Instead visualize London

  • “You know how to get there from Bristol .. right?”
    • (confirm a basic level of knowledge)
  • “And you know how to get to Bristol from Exeter?”
    • (drilling down to get to more detail)
  • “Oh .. you used to live in Exeter?”
    • (additional information unpacked by asking questions)
  • “Then you know Chagford?”
    • (reaffirming assumed knowledge to make the next step as simple as possible)
  • “Of course you do .. well … Chagford is only a couple of miles away .. you need to head back to the church …”
    • (restatement of the problem, simplification of the actual ask)

At a stroke the driver’s challenge is significantly reduced and very manageable.
