đđź Martin Gutmann: Are we celebrating the wrong leaders?
Spoiler Alert. Yes - but that’s not an excuse not to watch it.
This is what a digital coup looks like. A New Ted Talk From Carole Cadwalladr.

Finding Your Life's Purpose

Of course it is. But the bigger question is what is your purpose?
Imagine my delight to stumble across this Ted Talk ... 'How to know your life's purpose in 5 minutes.' Finally!
Adam sets the scene pretty quickly. You just need to ask yourself 5 questions and 'Bob's your Uncle'.
5 Questions To Answer Your Purpose
- who you were
- what do you do
- who do they do it for
- what those people want or need
- what they get out of it - how they changed as a result
Simple. Right?
It's so simple that he takes the entire audience on a journey of him asking - and them answering - those 5 questions, by shouting them out.
The answer to question 1 - after a little prompting - was loud.
Question 2, still pretty good.
After that it all falls apart. By the time you get to the answer to number 5, well it's not that you could hear a pin drop - but you kind of get the feeling that the audience is sorry for him.
Why?
I think itâs because the questions are easy. You've read them so many times before. The answers, not so much.
To be clear, the purpose of this article is not to state the 'bleeding obvious', but rather to highlight that if you are struggling with that definition. It's ok ...
We all are!
The Edge Is Where It's At
As we move computing power to the edge, this talk resonates even more. Two - that's two conversations just yesterday that I had where we talked about bringing the power of computing to your pocket.
Think about it - we glibly talk about the 'supercomputer in our pocket' - and we use it to 'like' Facebook posts, send messages and whatever else it is you do - but hardly supercomputer activity.

Conversation one, no need to explore in detail, but I loved the sentiment of the thinking of the company ...
We want to move analytics to the people not their data to the corporation.
Jim Hewitt
... right up my street. As I have always said ....

I donât think it will be this year, but Jim will be guesting on the podcast. It's going to be a great conversation.
Conversation two, I can't say too much about, suffice to say that the work being done is moving the power of a Cray (for those that donât know - the Cray literally is a Supercomputer) into your house! Get your head around that for a minute.
I am reminded of (what I thought was an old bumper sticker, but turns out is a real quote.

Play, Passion, Purpose
Needless to say those three words grabbed my attention immediately. And then when he said ...
The culture of schooling is radically at odds with the culture of learning that produces innovators.
Tony Wagner
I was hooked.
Very good Ted Talk - just one gripe ...
He just about opens the talk with
I came to understand, that there's a set of core competencies every young person must be well on their way to mastery before he or she finished high school.
- critical thinking and problem solving
- collaboration across networks and leading by influence
- agility and adaptability
- initiative and entropenorialism
- effective oral and written communication
- accessing and analyzing information
- curiosity and imagination
Tony Wagner
i.e. if you have left school, sorry - we taught you all wrong as to how to succeed in the life in front of you.
What he should have said was
I came to understand, that there's a set of core competencies every person must master.
I know he doesn't mean it and I guess it is about education - but the implication is that you have left school then 'we taught you all wrong'.
Keeping that in mind ... well worth a watch.

My Thoughts
Excellent summary of how what we just assume to be the truth is bunkum. This applied to our assumptions about age. Bottom line - you are never too old

Humanity
Newsletter Three from People First just launched. The theme for this week's edition is 'Humanityâ including me spotting this in a clothing store recently. I didnât buy it - but I sure was tempted, as I ready myself for Octoberâs IIW. (more)
The Anti-CEO Playbook
I am not usually slow in attacking the nature of business, but not sure the 'Anti-CEO' playbook is exactly the right angle here. That said Hamid Ulukaya's points are excellent. How he built Chobani is a fascinating story. And at one point I was very much reminded me of a couple of People First tenets.
As someone called âGagaâ by a very little person … I was fascinated to watch this and discover it means ‘water’ :-)
Seriously - if you are into data, analysis, video,. language, learning … this is a must watch
