The British groat was struck throughout the 18th century, though by the 1800s it had come mostly to be coined to be given as ceremonial alms at the Royal Maundy service. It was resurrected as a circulating coin in 1836, as the Royal Mint sought to fill the gap between the penny and sixpence. The fourpence was chosen at the urging of the politician Joseph Hume, who noted that fourpence was the cab fare for short journeys. The new coin did not endear him to hackney drivers, who previously often received sixpence without a request for change, and they gave it the nickname “joey”. There was also confusion between the groat and the sixpence.
It seems odd that we aren’t hearing more about GOP states openly gerrymandering their districts in advance of 2026 - and nobody seems to be reporting on it - at least not very much. Shocked? Not really.
The owner of this Range Rover (which pretty much means you can predict the rest of this post) is clearly very important and too busy to keep his new car clean - it’s a Monday morning so he’s probably even busier at the weekend - and when he stopped for his mangy morty twat-spiced latte parked the car as close to the coffee shop as he could to the store - which happens to be a bus stop - rushing out of store avec said twat-spiced latte - and despite lines of cars hurtling along the road - opens his door to bring all cars to a screeching halt while he climbs in and accelerates off with barely a wave - let alone a thankyou/apology. no need to describe him - one of those shaved heads that from behind clearly describes what he is.
