With service like this … there is seriously no reason to leave home.

Shoutout to the Wonderful People at Panic.

I have used Transmit to connect to my servers for years. N’er a problem until a couple of weeks ago.

I didn’t think I had changed anything - but did my usual checks ….

  • what have I done wrong … nothing I could find.
  • what has changed - a couple of things - uninstalled apps
  • switched off Firewall.

Still no connection.

I pinged my hosting provider - Siteground.

They could access from their end no problem.

Asked me to try accessing via a different network, so tried by camping on the phone.

Straight in.

Back to my usual access - nothing.

Their conclusion was something about my network provider.

In my case it’s Spectrum and I just shivered at the thought.

So, first I contacted Panic, to see if they had any ideas.

Longer story shorter …

Ran some diagnostics and sent to them - and they asked me who was hosting my servers … told them.

And then in an email this morning ….

Out of curiosity, can you change the connection type to FTP with TLS/SSL? From my own SiteGround servers, I know that helps.

… and BOOM. Working.

This bear ain’t technical - so I have no idea what strange magic this is and why suddenly everything is different, but suffice to say … WORKING.

Thankyou Panic.

I got an oil change on my car … two weeks later an email from my insurance company.

Doesn’t matter what they said - what matters is ‘WTF’!! Who needs to be worried about digital tracking when a simple oil change results in this.

I am in California - is this happening in other states?

When did we ‘decide’ to allow this kind of tracking and reporting?

When did I grant my permission for this to happen?

How you know what kind of establishment you are sitting in.

Jax: “What’s the Chianti like?”

Waiter: “Let me check.”

5 minutes later

Waiter: “It’s red.”

🎥 Oppenheimer, 2023 - ★★★★½

Stunning. 🤯 … if you’ll pardon the pun. Wanted to see it - and couldn’t fit the IMAX experience in to the schedule, so will go again next week. Not for me to review this movie - far more qualified and interesting people than me to read on that front - BUT - it is as good as you have been told.

Two thoughts beyond what yours truly has so far read.

1] I knew Robert Downey Junior was in the movie and just did not recognize him. He must surely be up for a best supporting actor nomination.

2] I did not know Tom Conti was in the film - and there he was - playing Einstein. For me, not a logical choice, but having scene him - GREAT choice.

About two minutes in and already this 🔗 NOSTR client makes more sense than others I have used.

🎵 Spotted in a store yesterday … reminding me of the permanent loan of my vinyl collection to a friend in the UK.

The state of right wing comedy - without irony.

🔗 We are watching the brutal reality of what climate scientists told us would happen. How will we respond?

For British tourists still flying to Greece while it is on fire and a few holdout news organisations, the answer seems to be to look away or deflect.

No No No - you have it all wrong.

🔗 Linda Yaccarino: does Twitter’s CEO have the most difficult job in tech.

Don’t know. Don’t care. It’s not as if she could have been blindsided.

Another entry into the Encyclopedia of ‘what could possibly go wrong’.

🔗 Rewind

Captures everything you’ve seen on your Mac and iPhone and makes it searchable with AI. Your colleagues will wonder how you do it all.

I will wonder why you did it at all?

To be fair, I haven’t read their ToCs. In fact I don’t even know if there are any. I just wonder how many people will do as they ask without thinking things through.

Cleared. Again.

Has he ever been found guilty through all these allegations on two different continents?

We’ve talked about 🔗 Anti Libraries (un-libraries, non-libraries) in the past. Adding this one to the ‘canon’.

This Substack about 🔗 Upside Down Maps reminded me of this episode of 📼 Map Men on YouTube

Definitely more information in the article - but Map Men is far more entertaining.

🔗 Digital Typography Technology: The Cold War TrueType Created

I know there are all kind of ‘font people’ out there - including @pimoore (who I am guessing knows all this already), but I thought it made for an interesting history lesson.

🪦 56 is way too young Sinéad - so sorry that you are no longer with us.
