🤖 ChatGPT chats to ChatJP

Turns out that ChatGPT can be pretty useful. Who knew?

In case you aren’t keeping up - I have been playing around with embedding video on 🔗 john.philpin.com. I cracked it a while back - but the process of creating the clip had a lot of friction because of the app I was using.

Fixed that - thanks to learning that the podcast app I use every day (Overcast) has had audio clipping since 2019. Seriously!

So friction to creating the clip removed, but still stuck on how a visitor would know the app was ‘playable’ (no little ‘play’ arrow) and even when they did - up popped another window …

As @Miraz wrote …

It’s not clear that it’s an audio clip

… and as @pratik wrote

I wish it started playing in-page.

💯❗️

I am not a developer, coder, programmer … by any stretch of the imagination - hell - I don’t even play one on TV. I impressed myself to even manage to embed the video - to play in line? Time for a chat.

I know how much time I spend googling css / html stuff to copy and paste into the site - find it doesn’t work - spending more time to find the right structure - repeat - until it finally works. I looked at Google with significant trepidation.

Enter ChatGPT that I have played around with to better understand capabilities, but never with a view to creating something ‘production ready’.

From opening ChatGPT to getting a finished result took me about two minutes - half of which was waiting for my web site page to flush out the old and refresh the new - twice (as the chat below makes clear).

For posterity - my conversation is below.

Oh - and this was using ChatGPT-3.

🔗 This is the finished post in action.

🎛️🎙️ Micropayments. Have their time finally come?

I don’t know - and I sure can’t tell from this podcast - but David Marcus sounds confident.

If you are working in or around this program in California - would love to hear from you.

Harry Belafonte ‘managing’ his audience singing the Banana Boat song. 🔗 You know why it is here.

Same song - from the extraordinary Stan Freberg (we don’t hear much about him these days ) - in 1957 - with his (I think very funny) parody of the same song).

♻️ Life Is A Remix - Escher ~v~ The New Yorker

Which reminds me that I need to find that quote that reminds us that all life is just ‘replication at scale’

Of course the human invention of copyright law then results in things like the court case between Ed Sheeran and the estate of Marvin Gaye - which in turn conjurs up memories of Zeppelin and Spirit, Harrison and … who was it now … the list is endless.

Meanwhile - The New Yorker’s cover is … well - see for yourself …

Escher

The New Yorker

I wonder if the Max Escher estate is going to start something?

🎙️ Turns Out I Don't Need Snipd Afterall ...

I have had three actions in ‘Things’ now for weeks. They were there to remind me to post a snippet from three podcasts that I wanted to share. The actual snipping and posting is not that hard - so why did I need to set a reminder?

BECAUSE

I use Overcast to listen to Podcasts and I had no intention of moving my listening experience over to Snipd. Earlier in the year I had been playing with Snipd. and even posted a couple … 🔗 here and 🔗 here, but the friction on the adhoc process in the workflow - not so easy.

Snipd is a good app for extracting a slice and posting. BUT I listen to Podcasts in Overcast, so when I wanted to snip something, I had to;

  • make a mental note of where in the podcast I was
  • go to Snipd
  • find the podcast
  • find the episode
  • get to the part I want to snip …

… and only then could I start the process.

Clumsy - at best - and lots of friction - so I just made a note in Things - which you now know I never got round to!

I might be blind, ignorant or stupid - but tonight I discovered that Overcast offers very similar (identical?) functionality. Is that new? Am I really that slow?

Anyway, just tried out the Overcast mechanism - and very nice, sitting right there in front of me.

🔗 My first example

Snipd account deleted.

TL;DW … over an hour of nothingness to get to this!

PS - no I didn’t watch it - that’s what ‘fast forward’ is for - and the background music is not chill.

I don’t think that this little quote post has spawned the largest number of comments on my blog, but I am reasonably sure that it has generated some of the longest and most thoughtful replies … from so many different people with great questions and thoughtful answers. Thank-you all.

🎙️The Japanese Toilet Paradigm is this week’s podcast from Rob Long. He’s always good, this week talking a little about renaming HBOMax to Max. He clearly didn’t think it a good idea.

He then moved on to offer advice to NBC should they be thinking about doing something similar.

I paraphrase …

It didn’t work for HBOMax - it definitely won’t work for Peacock.

‘Titled Posts’ is a category on my blog that just ‘doesn’t do it’. It’s an automatic category that is added when a post has a title. Nothing wrong with that … but I have this morning introduced a curated category called ‘Long Form’ that I intend to use to highlight ‘true’ Long Form posts.

So, for example, all my archived humo(u)r posts can be found under ‘Titled Posts’ - but won’t be recategorized as ‘Long Form’, nor will ‘Film Reviews’ … etc.

Next job [which will be ongoing labour of love - like so much on this blog (I mean - what else could it be?)] - will be to remove the ‘Titled Post’ category completely. (Though I will still let the rule run - so I can go back in and more easily curate.

In that 🔗 last post Siri tried to spell ‘Heroes’ … ‘Herpes’

☢️ This Is Not America

🎵 This Is Not America was always a 🎵musical favorite in my world - as indeed was The Falcon and The Snowman, which featured the song … and then the movie came to mind this morning as I was catching up on my ‘piece of glass’.

To some, the meaning of the lyrics …

A little piece of you,
the little piece in me,
will die
(this is not a miracle)
For this is not America

… seem to be shrouded in mystery - but to me - not really. At the simplest level they seem to reference that the geography that the two characters found themselves in was definitely not America. Happy Days … you could leave wherever you are - come home to America - and all would be ‘well’ again.

Fast forward 35 years.

The lyrics remain relevant - except now you don’t need to leave America. And because of that, there is no longer that safe haven that our two ‘heroes’ wanted to return to.

(Yes - I am having a day - and it’s not even 11am)

Later - in the title, I really wanted to use the Americn Flag EMOJI - but for some reason, it wasn’t rendering correctly on the web site ….

US Flag not Rendering

So I changed it.

🎥 The Falcon and the Snowman, 1985 - ★★★★

Long time since I watched this - but I have watched it more than once - which is rare for me ... Came to mind this morning as I was reading the news and my mind revisiting the theme song and then thinking about Schlesinger - and then Timothy Hutton and of course the amazing Sean Penn. Well worth a **focused** watch.

🌡️ It's Called Global Warming

Ever wondered why we used call it ‘Global Warming’ - and now we call it ‘Climate Change’?

Said it before - say it again - Language is important. More than important - it shapes how society thinks.

Frank Luntz understood that …

Memo exposes Bush’s new green strategy. is a 20 year old article describing how Frank Luntz first introduced the idea of ‘changing the dialogue’.

Doesn’t ‘climate change’ sound so much nicer than ‘global warming’?

Which is why 20 years later we read these kind of headlines quite regularly.

One in three people on the planet hit by ‘monster Asian heatwave’

Language is one of the 8 pillars of People First thinking where we explore the subtle art of manipulating conversation and dialogue through the careful choice of words. It’s rampant.
