That moment when you are all in line at the single register that is open and then a second line opens up and the guy right at the back of the line moves over and jumps the entire line.

I looked directly at him … ‘Winning’ I said.

Not sure he understood.

Emoji nuance has clearly gone mainstream. Now if you don’t understand the history and current usage of a phrase .. you can find yourself on the wrong side of the mob.

Not saying he didn’t mind you and he has history.

But I had no clue of the genesis of the phrase.

There but for the grace, etc

🔗 Is this the best comment on Rishi Sunak’s new Northern Ireland deal?

if food is available on supermarket shelves in Britain”

‘If’ … not ‘when’.

“One last thing, as this seems somehow connected to the story – as I was walking up the hill to Rick Rubin’s studio that morning, I saw a handsome man, dressed in black trousers and a red shirt with the sleeves rolled up, leaning against the hood of a big American car, smoking a cigarette. The man looked like he’d stepped out of a movie. It was Joe Strummer from The Clash. Hi, Joe, I said. Hey man, he said, what are you doing here? I’m going to sing with Johnny Cash, I said. Joe nodded and smiled and sucked on his cigarette. Then he gave a little slow-motion wave as I went inside.”

“While writing the the Atlantic piece, I remembered that Dahl and Ian Fleming were friends - Dahl wrote the screenplay for You Only Live Twice, the Bond film where Sean Connery tapes up his eyes to pass for Japanese, and the viewer finally sees Blofeld’s scarred face.”

💬 Helen Lewis

“Hovertext: Have you noticed this thing where people say AI will never be as good as Shakespeare, but then nobody mentions that none of us are as good as Shakespeare?”

🔗 An American healthcare story; A Whole Lotta Nothing via @dave

“ The entire world except the US figured out the cost of medicine is easy to handle if it is shared by all. I don’t think anything will change in the US in my lifetime, if I really want health security as I get older, I would have to leave the country.“

The American way is ‘I’, whilst a lot of the rest of world is ‘we’ … though in the U.K. at least, the government is moving as fast it can towards ‘I’ and away from ‘we’.

The 51st state is alive and well.

🎥 The Pale Blue Eye, 2022 - ★★★½

3 stars from me, 4 stars from Jax. I likeChristian Bale’s work, I thought the ‘Poe’ character was excellent … but in the end, I didn’t really care, even with ‘twist’ at the end.

Turkey? Again?

Dare I suggest that the conclusion in Scripting News: Monday, February 27, 2023 that @dave has come to is wrong.

@manton isn’t limiting the number of characters in a post, he is limiting how many of those characters get to appear in the stream.

Count me as one who doesn’t want to scroll through 5,000 words of one post to get to the next … so I am for it. Though there might be a better way that keeps all of us happy.

What if I got to choose in my settings how many characters I see in any post in the stream before it is truncated. In this way, the experience of the reader is put first and the writer doesn’t have to think what gets truncated or not .. because they have no idea where their readers are setting their truncation point?
