@bradenslen I like the assumption that wired headphones would be used if there were an audio jack .. my experience is that some 50% of mobile phone users believe that their music, podcast, personal conversation is so important that it needs to be shared … at volume .. with everyone in their immediate vicinity … apparently keeping the boombox legacy of the 80s alive and well .. while still managing to raise it a notch.
Had cause to share this again with someone else being ‘sold a line’.
@MitchWagner i am talking about what ‘we’ - the great unwashed see. I have always read a lot of words, sentences and paragraphs written by journalists - and if that profession uses the em dash - all good - I am no grammarian - witness my blog.
My point is that the percentage increase in the number of emdashes i see across all that I read - means something is going on - we didn’t suddenly have a ten fold increase in journaists/properly qualified writers - but we definitely have a ten fold increase in em dash usage (and of course ten fold is an absolute fact - that I know - because I feel it is right.)
@MitchWagner I think em dash defenderers miss the point … until AI you barely saw an em dash .. much less knew what one was or even why it was used .. unless you read Emily , Virginia et al .. and sorry .. people generally do not. Haven’t even.
The population didn’t decide in the space of a year to discover and start using them … there’s something else going on. What? I cannot answer. I just have ideas.
@manton There is NO interesting Content … anywhere. None. Me 6 years ago on a rant that was an initial attempt to drop into a single post why we should reject it.
Maybe time for an update.
