Boeing will pay $200 million to settle SEC fraud charges related to 2 deadly airplane crashes involving the company’s 737 MAX aircraft between 2018 and 2019. (my bold)

The 2 crashes caused 346 deaths - so that works out to a little over half a million dollars per death … not that the families will see much of that - if any.

Meanwhile

  • The cost to Boeing is somewhere between the SALES PRICE of 1/2 a 737 - to as much as 2x 737s (As of August 2022, 15,302 Boeing 737s have been ordered and 11,117 delivered.)

  • The fine represents just 2% of the total investment Boeing made into the 737.

The CEO responsible left Boeing December 2019 - and will be fined $1 million … his exit package in 2019 was around $60 million - so what 2% of his exit.
