Age assurance on the internet is a solved problem being implemented wrong. The technology already exists to prove you’re over 18 without revealing who you are — a cryptographically signed affidavit that says “age over 18, let them in” and nothing else. No name, no address, no ID on file. But that’s not what’s being built. What’s being built is every website collecting your driver’s licence and storing it in an S3 bucket waiting to be breached — because identity data is monetisable and age data isn’t. The regulation is demanding the right outcome and enabling the wrong solution. We’re not solving the problem of protecting children online. We’re solving the problem of how to harvest more identity data from adults.
